Weedman & Related Family Members

In the Winter 1999 Weedman Newsletter, a list of family members who served in the War Between the States along with known service history was given. Frieda Davison who contributed much of the material published provided an update and a new list of service information is shown below. This information was updated on May 22, 2003 by Frieda with minor inputs from others. New information received in January, 2004 from Bill Weedman of Springfield, IL has allowed a much more detailed record for John B. Weedman (see below).

Despite the fact that the family had been in the country only 110 years when the War started, the fact that family members were on both sides of the conflict shows the geographical diversity reached. Literally, we had cousins fighting cousins in the Civil War.

Weedman, Bernard Thomas (also seen as Barnard) – Confederate.  Enlisted 12 Oct 1861 at Jacksonville, Duval Co., FL.  On the same day, he was mustered into Pickett’s Company of the Florida Independent Cavalry.  He was mustered out of this unit 31 Mar 1862 at Jacksonville, Duval Co., FL.  On 10 Aug 1862 he was mustered into Co. A, 2nd Florida Battalion Infantry.  He was transferred out on 1 May 1864 at Charleston, SC to the CS Navy. He was described on his enlistment as 5 ft., 8 in. tall, dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.  He was born in St. Augustine, FL   Son of Philip (or Felipe) and Eliza (Wickes) Weedman.

Weedman, Daniel R. – Confederate (also seen as D.R. Weidman).  Daniel Weedman enlisted in Capt. Butler's Company, 1 Regiment Cavalry, Kentucky Volunteers on 14 Aug 1862 at Big Springs, KY.  He was residing in Mead Co., KY at the time of enlistment.  His first muster was 12 October 1862 at Big Springs, KY as a 2nd Lieutenant. in Co. F, 1st (Butler's) Kentucky Cavalry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.  His unit surrendered on 9 May 1865 at Washington, GA and on 29 May he took an oath of allegiance to the U. S. at Nashville, TN.  He had a fair complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes and was 6 ft. tall.  Son of Stephen and Mary Ann (Gilbert) Weedman. 

Weedman, George – Union. Enlisted 8 October 1864 as a Private from Indiana.  He was residing in Rockford, Ind., when he enlisted. He served in the Indiana 140th Infantry, Company D.  He was mustered our 11 July 1865 at Greensboro, NC.  (Is this George Glascock Weedman from Perry Co., IN?). Family unknown. 

Weedman, George Thomas – Union. Enlisted as a Corporal in Co. G, 107th Illinois Infantry on 6 August 1862 from DeWitt Co., Illinois. He was residing in Mt. Pleasant, IL (subsequently re-named Farmer City) at the time of enlistment.  Mustered out 21 Jun 1865 in Salisbury, NC, as a Private. Son of John Jesse and Rachael (Wilson) Weedman. 

Weedman, Isaiah – Union.  DeWitt Co., Illinois. Enlisted 30 July 1861 as a Private. Died in the battle of Holly Springs, MS  20 December 1862 as a Sergeant in Co. F, 2nd IL Cavalry Regiment. Also, shows service in Co. A, same regiment. Son of John Jesse and Rachael (Wilson) Weedman. 

Weedman, Jacob T. – Union.  Enlisted 11 February 1864 in DeWitt Co., IL as a Private in Co. I, 39th Illinois Infantry.  Was living in Santa Anna, IL at the time of enlistment. Mustered out on 28 May 1865. Died in Denver, CO.

Weedman, Jacob Isom (also appears as Jacob H. Weedman) - Union. Served in 23rd Indiana Infantry, Co. H from Crawford Co., IN as a Corporal. Died at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 5, 1863 of typhoid fever. He was a son of David and Rebecca (Crecelius) Weedman of Crawford Co.

Weedman, Jacob Willis – Union (1847- 15 Dec 1910). Served in 13th Indiana Cavalry, Company L from Perry Co. IN.  He was living in Adyeville, IN at the time of his enlistment. It is believed that he was a cannon loader in the Civil War. He deserted 12 Oct 1865.  Son of Daniel and Nancy (Spurrier) Weedman.

Weedman, John B.  – Union. Enlisted 26 Sept 1861 in DeWitt Co. IL as a Private in Co. I, 39th Illinois Infantry.  His first muster was 11 Oct 1861 in Chicago, IL.  He was living in Santa Anna, IL at the time of enlistment.  His records describe him as being 36 years old, having dark eyes and a dark complexion.  He was 5 ft. 11 1/2 inches tall.  He was mustered out of service at Springfield, IL on  29 Sept. 1864.  He later moved to Ashland Co. OH.  Son of Jacob and Catherine (Bishop) Weedman. Information from Bill Weedman, Springfield, IL indicated John B. Weedman enlisted from Mt. Pleasant, IL on 14 September 1861 and mustered into service in Chicago on 11 December 1861. The Regiment known as "Yates Phalanx" commanded by Col. Stephen G. Hicks served in 1 Brigade, Division 10, and 24 Corps Army of the James and engaged in the following battles:

He was homorably discharged on 22 Sept 1864 having served his three year commitment. Bill Weedman points out that Fort Wagner was the final battle in the movie, Glory.

Weedman, John H. – Union.  Enlisted 10 Feb 1865 at Louisville, KY as a Private.  On 20 Feb 1865 he was mustered into Co. G, 55th Kentucky Infantry in Louisville.  He deserted 2 Mar 1865 at Covington, KY. Family connection unknown.

 

Weedman, John W. – Union. Enlisted in DeWitt Co., IL 4 Sept 1861 in Co. I, 39th Illinois Infantry as a Private.  Was living in Santa Anna, IL at the time of enlistment.  He re-enlisted 1 Jan. 1864. He was captured and died 12 October 1864 at Andersonville (GA) Prison. He is buried there in grave number 10785. He was a Corporal at the time of his death. Some DeWitt Co. histories state he died of starvation at Andersonville but records there indicate he died of scorbutus [Scorbutus is an old word for scurvy which is a condition caused by lack of vitamin C in the diet.  Symptoms include general weakness, anemia, gum disease and skin hemorrhages].  Son of Asa and Delilah (Hand) Weedman. 

Weedman, Myram – Confederate. Enlisted 2 October 1861 at Green River, KY as a Private  On the same day he was mustered into Co. B, 9th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He was wounded and taken prisoner at Shiloh 7 Apr. 1862 and sent to prison at Camp Douglas, IL.  He was exchanged on 8 Sept. 1862 for Union prisoners at Vicksburg.  He returned to service, but was wounded again on 23 July 1864 at Intrenchment Creek, GA.  His unit surrendered at Washington, GA on 6 May 1865 and he took the oath of allegiance to the U. S. on 21 May 1865.  He resided in Mead County, KY at the time of his enlistment and was described as having fair complexion, sandy hair, hazel eyes and was 5 ft. 6 inches tall.  Son of Stephen and Mary Ann (Gilbert) Weedman. 

Weedman, Norman A. – Union.  Enlisted 17 February 1864 in DeWitt Co., IL as a Private in Co. I, 39th Ill. Infantry.  Was living in Mt. Pleasant, IL at the time of enlistment. Achieved rank of Corporal. Was mustered out 6 Dec 1865 at Norfolk, VA.  Son of Asa and Delilah (Hand) Weedman. Died in 1869 possibly of War related injuries. 

Weedman, Phillip – Confederate. Enlisted 12 Oct 1861 at Jacksonville, Duval Co., FL.  On the same day, he was mustered into Pickett’s Company of the Florida Independent Cavalry.  He was mustered out of this unit 31 Mar 1862 at Jacksonville, Duval Co., FL.  On 10 Aug 1862 he was mustered into Co. A, 2nd Florida Battalion Infantry.  He was transferred out on 1 May 1864 at Charleston, SC to the CS Navy.  He was listed as a prisoner of war on 6 April 1865 and took the oath of Allegiance on 24 Jun 1865.  He was born in St. Johns Co., FL. Son of Philip (or Felipe) and Eliza (Wickes) Weedman.

Weedman, Richard Calvin – Union.  Enlisted 6 Sept 1862 as a Private in Co. H, 80th Indiana Infantry. Discharged 4 May 1863 as a Sergeant. Born in Otwell, IN son of Jonathan and Frances (Ballard) Weedman.

Weedman, Thomas St. Clair (nicknamed Doc) – Union. Enlisted 30 July 1861 in Co. F, 2nd IL. Cavalry as a Corporal from DeWitt Co., IL.  Resided in Platt Co., Ill., at the time of enlistment.  His first muster was 12 Aug 1861 at Springfield, IL.  He was 22 years old at the time of his enlistment. Also served in Co. A of the same unit. Achieved rank of Quartermaster Sergeant. Discharged 11 Aug 1864.  Son of John Jesse and Rachael (Wilson) Weedman.

Weedman, Zadoc Casey - Union. Entered service as a 1st Lt. On 3 January 1864 from DeWitt Co., Ill., in Co. G, 107th Illinois Infantry; resigned 25 Oct 1865. Achieved rank of Captain. Son of John Jesse and Rachael (Wilson) Weedman.

 

Husbands of Weedman Daughters Who Served in the Civil War

Bliss, John A. Husband of Margaret Weedman of Union Township, Perry County. IN. He enlisted as a Corporal in Company K, 38th Indiana Infantry Regiment on 18 September 1861. He re-enlisted on 28 December 1863. Killed in action at Kenesaw Mountain near Atlanta, GA on 17 June 1864. He is buried at the Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, GA in Section H, site 8612. There were apparently no children of this marriage. Margaret (Weedman) Bliss later married Grannison Boone. They are buried in the Stephenson Cemetery near Magnet (formerly Rono), IN.

Figgins, Daniel. Husband of Mary Jane Weedman of Union Township, Perry County, IN. Mary Jane Weedman and Margaret Weedman were sisters (see entry for John A. Bliss). He enlisted as a private in Company K of the 81st Indiana Infantry Regiment on 29 August 1862. He died on 22 December 1862 at a battle in Nashville, TN. He is buried in Section B, site 6810 in the Nashville National Cemetery. His widow filed for a widow's pension in 1863 (application number 20,571) and it appears a minor filed for a stipend in May, 1868 (application number 160,493, certificate number 114,157). Mary Jane (Weedman) Figgins had three small children when her husband was killed, one of whom died in 1868. She later married Eli Farmer.

Hirst, Edward (also seen as Hurst, Edward) – Union. Husband of Alzira Payne Weedman, widow of Jeremiah Weedman. Enlisted 4 Sep 1861 as a Private.  He was residing in Santa Anna, IL at the time of enlistment.  On 11 Oct 1861 he was mustered into Company I, 39th Illinois Infantry.  He was killed in action at Drewry's Bluff, Va. [also seen as Deep Bottom Run] on August 16, 1864. Buried in Campground Cemetery, Farmer City, IL.

Norris, Dr. Andrew S. – Union. Husband of Mary Ann Weedman Norris. Enlisted 17 Jul 1863 as an Assistant Surgeon. On the same day he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 60th Illinois U.S. Infantry from Farmer City, IL.  At the time of enlistment he was living in Santa Anna, IL.  He re-enlisted 23 Feb 1864.  On 26 Mar 1864, he was commissioned into Field and Staff of the 122nd Illinois Infantry.  At the time of this enlistment he was living in Cairo, IL.  He was mustered out 15 Jul 1865 at Mobile, AL.

The following had Civil War service but are not believed connected to any of the known Weedman lines. Possibly Weidman,Wiedman, or Widerman

Weedman, A.M.E. – Union (also seen as Antonie M.E. Widerman). 6th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry.

Weedman, Christopher – Union (also seen as Christopher Wiedman).  He enlisted 23 May 1861 as a private.  On the same day, he was mustered into Co. E, 1st New Jersey Infantry.  He re-enlisted on 28 Dec 1863.  He was mustered out on 29 Jun 1865 at Hall’s Hill, VA.

Weedman, David – Union (also seen as David Wiedman). 3rd Regiment West Virginia Cavalry.

Weedman, Frank – Union. 1st Regiment Missouri State Militia

Weedman, Herman – Union (also seen as Herman Wedeman). 1st Regiment, Michigan Light Artillery.

Weedman, Jacob F. – Union.  He enlisted 26 Aug 1864 at Unadilla, NY as a private.  On 13 Sep 1864 he was mustered into Co. H, New York 144th Infantry.  He was mustered out on 25 Jun 1865 at Hilton Head, SC.

Weedman, Julius G. H. – Union.  Enlisted on 6 Aug 1861 at New York City, NY as a private.  On 30 Aug 1861 he was mustered into Co. H, 43rd New York Infantry.  On 18 July 1862 he was transferred to Co. E of the same unit.  He was discharged for disability on 27 Oct 1862 at Hagerstown, MD.

Weedman, Malachi – Union.  22nd Regiment New York Infantry.

Weedman, Peter – Union. He enlisted 26 Aug 1864 at Unadilla, N.Y. as a Private.  On 13 Sep 1864 he was mustered into Co. H, New York 144th Infantry.  He was mustered out on 25 Jun 1865 at Hilton Head, S.C.
